Greeting Card for Marie Czihaczek

Watercolor and ink on card • 21.5 x 21.5 cm
  • Egon Schiele - 12 June 1890 - 31 October 1918 Egon Schiele 1907

At just 17 years old, Egon Schiele created this heartfelt name day card for his aunt Marie Czihaczek. Following the death of Schiele's father, Adolf—Marie’s brother—two years earlier, her husband, Leopold, assumed guardianship of the young artist. While Schiele had a strained relationship with his uncle, the financial support of the Czihaczeks allowed him to attend the prestigious Vienna Academy of Fine Arts.

This 1907 piece predates Schiele’s so-called “Expressionist breakthrough” and stands as one of the few works in which he deliberately emulates Jugendstil, the Art Nouveau style made famous by the German magazine Jugend.

Isn't it beautiful?

P.S. Egon Schiele created many exceptional works of art; some of them decorate the pages of our beautiful planner, which you can check out in our DailyArt Shop.  :)
