Still-Life with Flowers

Oil on canvas • 75 x 55.8 cm
  • Rachel Ruysch - 3 June 1664 - 12 October 1750 Rachel Ruysch 18th century

Rachel Ruysch was the daughter of Frederik Ruysch, a professor of anatomy and botany, and grew up surrounded by her father's extensive collection of curiosities. At 15, she entered the workshop of the famous painter Willem van Aelst and remained there until his death in 1683. Rachel Ruysch's fame was founded on the elegance of her technique and the freedom of her compositions. This painting is a typical and probably relatively early Ruysch still life with flowers. Check out how the leaves and flowers are extremely detailed against the dark background!
