As fleeting as a fragrance, this image of The Three Perfumes is a very delicate vision. Clad in flowing, richly patterned mantels of jewel tones, exquisitely embellished with roses and lotus-like blooms, three maidens gather around a fragrant white lily, while blue and pink droplets of perfume cascade down around them. Created by Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh, the wife and artistic partner of renowned Scottish architect and designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh, this piece is a great example of the Glasgow Style. Together, they pioneered this distinctive style—a blend of ancient Celtic motifs and Art Nouveau, harmonizing natural foliate forms with elegant stylization. Margaret Mackintosh’s expertise spanned repoussé metalwork, oil and watercolor painting, stencils, textiles, and interior design.
