Night View of Matsuchi Hill and the San’ya Canal

Color woodblock print; oban • 36.2 × 24.6 cm
  • Hiroshige - 1797 - October 12, 1858 Hiroshige 1857

Some view this scene as eerie and mysterious, while others find it evocative and romantic. In the darkened background, nestled at the foot of Matsuchi Hill and bordering the San'ya Canal near the pillars of the Imado Bridge in Edo (current Tokyo), the glowing lights of two restaurants add an air of allure. Stars shimmer above, their reflections dancing on the water below.

In the foreground, a geisha walks along the embankment, guided by the bright lantern of her attendant. As one of the few full portraits in the series, she stands out against the sultry backdrop. Perhaps returning from a banquet at one of the restaurants, she remains an enigmatic presence in the night.
