Henri-Edmond Cross was a French painter and printmaker. He is most acclaimed as a master of Neo-Impressionism, and he played an important role in shaping the second phase of that movement. He was a significant influence on Henri Matisse and many other artists. His work was instrumental in the development of Fauvism.

The watercolor we present today was based on Cross's oil painting, which is much less interesting than the watercolor, and why we are showing it. The artist portrayed Paris’s bullfighting arena using a compositional technique reminiscent of photographic cropping. The elegantly dressed spectators, distinguished by their stylish hats, are rendered in deep violet tones. Their binoculars create a visual link to the dramatic movements of the bullfighters, which we don't see here, but they are present in the primal composition. Here we see the zoom, even more tightly on the scene. Though executed in a watercolor medium, the work has the mosaic-like effect characteristic of the artist's Pointillist technique.
