The painting we present today shows Christ being brought by Roman soldiers before the High Priest Caiaphas shortly before being sentenced to death. He was questioned about his teachings while false witnesses spoke against him—a moment described in all four Gospels.

This is one of Honthorst’s most celebrated works, created when he lived in Rome, showing the strong influence of Caravaggio. The composition centers on the glow of a single candle, beside which the High Priest’s arm and raised finger command attention. Before him lies an open book containing the proscriptions of Mosaic Law, under which Christ’s claim to be the Messiah was punishable by death. Stripped of anecdotal detail, the scene achieves a concentrated intensity that recalls the directness of Caravaggio’s later works.
