Jessica Hayllar, the eldest daughter of artist James Hayllar, developed her considerable talent under her father’s close guidance, as did her sisters Edith, Mary, and Kate. Much of her work drew inspiration from the interiors of Castle Priory, the family’s richly furnished home in Wallingford on the Thames. She often painted domestic scenes, local villagers, and family occasions and gatherings. Windows and doorways were another frequent theme in her work. Ill health as a result of being knocked down by a carriage in 1900 greatly reduced her output in her later years when she was living in Bournemouth with her father. In her final years she mostly concentrated on painting flower pieces.

This painting reflects both the opulent setting and Hayllar’s refined attention to detail, as well as her confident use of color. Love it!
