Today, for the first day of Spring, we present a vast, serene Scandinavian field carpeted with white blooms under soft, natural light. The work shows Harald Sohlberg’s sensibility, evoking the still beauty of the Northern landscape around Røros in Norway. The lush meadow unfolds like a pale carpet of flowers beneath a cool, luminous sky. Rather than overwhelming the viewer with color, the painting draws its strength from restraint: soft whites, muted greens, and gentle light suggest a world just awakening.

As an image for the first day of Spring, the painting feels especially apt. This is not spring as sudden abundance, but spring as promise—a moment of balance between what has been endured and what is about to begin. The land has not yet burst into full color, yet life is unmistakably present.

Sohlberg was one of Norway’s most important early 20th-century artists. His work reflects his deep attachment to the northern landscape. Associated with Neo-Romanticism, Sohlberg sought not to describe nature realistically, but to convey its inner mood and spiritual resonance. Living and working largely outside artistic centers, he developed a highly personal vision in which landscapes become emotional states—calm, introspective, and quietly monumental.
