  • Vincent van Gogh - March 30, 1853 - July 29, 1890 Vincent van Gogh 1888

One of van Gogh’s lesser-known works, Pollard Willows at Sunset rendered the landscape at sunset in quick and thick, vigorous brushstrokes, focusing on the color highlighted by the golden light. Light and paint fuse as the strokes take on a new anatomy unique in the artist’s repertoire. "As far as work goes, I brought home a no.15 canvas today, it’s a drawbridge, with a little carriage going across it, outlined against a blue sky — the river blue as well, the banks orange with greenery, a group of washerwomen wearing blouses and multicoloured bonnets. And another landscape with a little rustic bridge and washerwomen as well. Lastly an avenue of plane trees near the station. 12 studies altogether since I’ve been here." - This is what Vincent wrote to his brother Theo in mid-March 1888. This is most likely one of the 12 studies referenced in the letter.
