In the early phase of his career, the Swedish artist Anders Zorn worked almost exclusively in watercolor. After first encountering the medium at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, he quickly achieved amazing success. Alongside numerous portraits, he created compelling landscapes. His exceptional ability to depict water was evident from the outset, and throughout his life he returned to this motif repeatedly, refining his technique. Around 1900, Zorn was among the most celebrated artists in the world, rising rapidly to prominence in Europe and gaining widespread acclaim in the United States, where he portrayed leading figures of high society and even two Presidents. In Sweden, he remains regarded as one of the nation’s foremost artists.

Despite extended periods abroad, motifs from Sweden run consistently through his oeuvre. In his early work that we present today, executed in a combination of watercolor and gouache, Zorn once again demonstrates his gift for depicting water with striking realism, capturing the shimmering reflections of sunlight on its surface. The sweeping view of the bay is complemented by lush vegetation, the leaves in the foreground suggested with light, fleeting brushstrokes.
