Niagara Falls, one of the most celebrated natural wonders of North America, lies on the border between New York State and Canada. Although tourism to the falls increased significantly after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825, artists and travelers had been drawn to the site long before. Among them was Louisa Davis Minot, who visited in 1818 and produced a pair of views of the falls. In this dramatic composition, Minot places the viewer high above the gorge, directing attention to the immense torrents of water cascading over the cliffs and the churning mist and rapids below. Two small figures standing on a rocky outcrop emphasize the overwhelming scale of the landscape. By contrasting human presence with the immense force of nature, Minot captures the sense of awe and grandeur for which Niagara Falls has long been renowned.
