On this day in 1862, Gustav Klimt, an Austrian symbolist painter and a founding member of the Vienna Secession movement, was born. On this occasion, we are presenting one of his works, but not any of the obvious, golden ones, but the one depicting ... a field full of flowers.
This painting appears like a blooming tapestry. It is a shimmering weave of luminous dabs of color, in which the red of the poppies stands out as the dominant hue. There is no visible sunlight and no shadow—only occasional outlines of trees and, along the high horizon, a gray band of sky.
The radiance of French Impressionism inspired Gustav Klimt to create works like this. Yet his poppy meadow conveys the very opposite of a fleeting visual impression—namely, the harmony and timeless essence of nature. Klimt painted this scene in the vicinity of the Attersee in Upper Austria, where he spent his summers from around 1900 onward.
