Happy first day of Summer!
Monet’s garden at Argenteuil, just outside Paris, inspired this vibrant scene featuring a sunlit bed of tall gladioli. At the edge of the flower bed stands the artist’s first wife, Camille, holding an umbrella as she takes a leisurely stroll. Rather than serving as the painting’s focal point, her presence helps define the scale and space of the garden. The real subject here is the breathtaking display of flowers. With thick, short brushstrokes—appearing as dabs up close but blending into form from a distance—Monet catches the flickering effect of light on a hot summer day.
