Whenever I look at Turner's depictions of the sea, I feel like I can really sense it. The air, the salt, the smell, the colors ... everything!

Turner was a master at conveying the beauty and enigma of light. In this work, cool, silvery moonlight is set against the glow of warm yellows and oranges from firelight, while shimmering reflections bring subtle movement to the otherwise calm surface of the water.

The scene depicts the port of Newcastle upon Tyne, where coal from inland mines is being loaded onto ships. This fuel powered the factories, mills, railways, and steamships that drove Britain’s transformation during the Industrial Revolution. The dark plume of smoke rising on the right may allude to the growing problem of air pollution that accompanied this rapid industrial growth.
