The Vision After the Sermon

oil on canvas • 74.4 x 93.1 cm

"Jacob wrestling with the Angel" was created during Gauguin's stay at Pont-Aven in Brittany, France where he joined the artist's colony . It depicts a scene from the Bible, where Jacob wrestles an angel. Local women, easily recognized by their white caps,  look on. What the painter had in mind while creating this work of art, nobody knows. It's symbolism.
