Autumn

  • Leo Gestel - 11 November 1881 - 26 November 1941, Hilversum Leo Gestel 1909

The Dutch painter Leo Gestel painted Autumn in Nijmegen, Netherlands, before his first visits to Bergen. The period from 1908 to 1920 was full of experiments for Gestel. In 1909 he immersed himself in the analysis of color. Following French Neo-Impressionism (Pointillism), he placed loose, contrasting dots of color on the canvas, so that the actual light sensation only took place in the eye of the viewer. The sky in this painting seems slightly luminous and that was exactly what Gestel wanted to achieve. His works from this period are intended to convey the sensation of the light on a misty Autumn day. Look at the brightly colored dots and dashes of paint that he used to create this effect. Later, along with Piet Mondrian, he was among the leading artists of Dutch modernism.
