Portrait of a Little Girl, Elise Købke, with a Cup

oil on paper mounted on canvas • 39 x 35.5 cm
  • Carl Christian Constantin Hansen - 1804 - 1880 Carl Christian Constantin Hansen 1850

Carl Christian Constantin Hansen was one of the painters associated with the Golden Age of Danish Painting. He was deeply interested in literature and mythology, and he tried to recreate a national historical painting based on Norse mythology. He also painted many altarpieces and monumental paintings. But today we present something completely different, a quite intimate portrait of a little girl who is holding a spoon in a cup. It seems that we have just interrupted her while she was drinking her tea or hot chocolate. With her gaze she seems to think, "what do you want from me, I was thinking about some serious stuff!"

By way of this painting we segue to the Danish Golden Age, a period of exceptional creative production in Denmark especially during the first half of the 19th century. Although Copenhagen had suffered from fires, bombardment, and national bankruptcy, the arts took on a new period of creativity catalyzed by Romanticism from Germany. Among the most important artists from this time are painters Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg and his students, including Wilhelm Bendz, Christen Købke, Martinus Rørbye, Constantin Hansen, and Wilhelm Marstrand, as well as the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen. You can check their works in our Archive. :)

We present today's painting thanks to the Statens Museum for Kunst.
