Snow at Itsukushima

Color woodblock print; oban • 26.5 × 39.5 cm
  • Hasui Kawase - May 18, 1883 - November 7, 1957 Hasui Kawase 1932

Unlike earlier ukiyo-e artists whose landscapes typically featured famous sites, Hasui Kawase was one of the first artists to record the unknown rural places and urban corners that he found so captivating. He traveled often and recorded the scenic wonders of Japan with drawings and watercolor paintings, which became the basis for many of his prints. In the face of rapid modernization during the 20th century, Hasui’s prints evoke a sense of nostalgia for the old Japan and a respect for traditional culture.

P.S. Did you know that Hasui's art inspired popular anime series such as My Neighbor Totoro?
