Maurice Denis was a French painter, decorative artist, and writer. He was an important figure in the transitional period between Impressionism and Modern Art, as his theories contributed to the foundations of Cubism, Fauvism, and Abstract Art. Following the First World War, he founded the Ateliers d'Art Sacré (Workshops of Sacred Art), decorated the interiors of churches, and worked for a revival of religious art.
This cover belongs to 12 prints titled Love, a series of color lithographs that form a disjointed narrative about a woman who experiences love, although it is unclear if she is falling in love with a man, nature, or her faith. Each soft and dreamlike image is paired with a caption of fragmented poetry that serves as its title, but these phrases do not directly describe their corresponding images.
P.S. Maurice Denis was part of Les Nabis, one of the most unique brotherhood in art history. Learn more about them and their art.
