The artist we present today, Charles Conder, was one of the founders of the Heidelberg school of Australian Impressionism. While claimed as Australian, Charles Conder lived and worked there for a relatively brief but foundational six-year period in his artistic career. In 1890 he left Australia for Europe, moving between France and England for the remainder of his life. On his way to Paris, Conder convalesced from a severe illness on a friend’s estate in Algeria. This painting was created there.

The description from the Art Gallery of New South Wales says that Conder painted this deeply evocative portrait of his inner world and alludes to the transience of life. For me, it is just an impression of a beautiful and spacious part of the world.

Have a great August everyone!
