On May 24, 1883, New York and Brooklyn officials hosted lavish festivities to celebrate the grand opening of the world’s longest steel suspension bridge that linked their two cities. Emily Roebling, the wife of chief engineer Washington A. Roebling and among those who helped to oversee the final phases of the bridge’s realization, was the first to walk across the bridge (afterward dubbed the Brooklyn Bridge). She was followed later that day by a troop of 21 elephants in a combination publicity stunt and dramatic display of the weight-bearing capacity of the bridge. This print, depicting the great fanfare and spectacular fireworks that heralded the official opening of the bridge was created as a fancy souvenir of this memorable event.
