This quiet scene is suffused with calm and stillness, interrupted only by a solitary female bather who pulls herself from the water using a branch. Although the setting is based on a real hillside lake in northern Italy, Camille Corot, a French painter who was a key figure in the development of landscape painting, painted the view from memory after returning to Paris in 1843, following his third and final journey to the region.

Rather than offering a precise depiction of the site, the work functions as a poetic souvenir. The landscape is reshaped by Corot’s silvery-gray and deep-green palette, as well as by his nostalgic recollections, transforming topography into an evocative, dreamlike vision.

Have a quiet Friday!
