Gaston La Touche
Gaston La Touche was one of the great colorists of Belle Époque France, known for his theatrical scenes filled with music and celebration. Although he was associated with artists such as Edgar Degas, he went his own way. Rather than focusing on the realism and social observation typical of Impressionism, he turned toward the elegant and dreamlike world of the Rococo tradition, especially the fête galante paintings of Jean-Antoine Watteau, celebrating the pleasures, love, music, and aristocratic leisure of a world long gone.
The Joyous Festival presents an enchanting nocturnal celebration in which elegantly dressed figures dance and gather beside illuminated gondolas beneath a sky filled with fireworks. In the background, we see the Palace of Versailles.
