Nikolaos Cheimonas was a painter and art teacher of Greek ancestry, born in the Russian Empire. He painted landscapes, which at the beginning of his career were mostly views of southern Russia and the Crimea. He was interested in lighting effects, clouds, and the sea. Over the years, his works became more expressionistic. After the revolution of 1917 he fled to Greece where he was trying to recover from the horrors he had experienced in Russia. At first, he lived on the famous Mount Parnassus, along with the shepherds. Parnassus inspired a series of paintings depicting "non-tourist" Hellas. During the 1920s he traveled around the country, creating a series of paintings of the Peloponnese, Crete, Santorini and Lefkada.
